NATO Mid-Term upgrade program
Maj. Gen. Axel Tüttelmann, NATO Early Warning & Control Force Commander, presents Maj. Gen. Stephen Schmidt, E-3A Component Commander with a certificate certifying the return of the 17th and final modernized E-3A AWACS aircraft
On 2 December the E-3A Component celebrated the completion of the $1.6 billion NATO Mid-term (NMT) modernization upgrade of the entire E-3A fleet of 17 aircraft.
The NMT Modernization program now provides a completely new operating environment includes improvements such as new state of-the-art radar consoles, the addition of five radar console stations, digital radio and satellite communications, Global Positioning System navigation, Multi-Sensor Integration, Mode S Identification Friend or Foe technology and an improved man-machine interface that uses advanced computer hardware and software to give aircrews faster access to information and increase situational awareness.
The NMT upgrade has transformed NATO AWACS into the most modern Air Battle Management platform in the world.
“NMT is the biggest and most significant transformation of any AWACS fleet in the world. With Mid-Term, NATO now truly has the most capable airborne information and battle management platform anywhere. It’s been said that, ‘behind every great fighting force there’s the power of information.” Mid-Term gives us phenomenal new tools to process and disseminate critical information in seconds, across the entire battlespace. Mid-term will also enable us transition to the net-centric environments of the future, where we will continue to leverage this critical information platform to its maximum potential. Mid-Term is the digital bridge that takes us beyond airborne command and control and into the new age of Information and true Battlespace Management,” says E-3A Component Commander Maj. Gen. Stephen Schmidt.
